D&I - "D" stands for defensiveness

Talking about diversity and inclusion can sometimes be a sensitive topic, as it involves discussing social and cultural issues that can be highly emotional and personal. However, there are several strategies that can be used to help facilitate productive conversations that are less likely to trigger defensiveness:

  1. Focus on common goals: Emphasize the benefits of diversity and inclusion, such as increased innovation and productivity, and how they align with shared values and goals.

  2. Use neutral language: Avoid using language that is confrontational or accusatory. Instead, use neutral and inclusive language that focuses on the issue at hand and does not attack individuals or groups.

  3. Listen actively: Create a safe space for dialogue and actively listen to others' perspectives, experiences, and feelings. This helps to build trust and understanding and can lead to constructive dialogue.

  4. Provide education and resources: Provide access to educational resources, such as articles, books, and videos that discuss diversity and inclusion. This can help individuals understand the importance of these topics and how they relate to their own experiences.

  5. Encourage empathy: Encourage individuals to try to understand other perspectives and experiences, and to put themselves in other people's shoes. This can help to create more empathy and understanding, and reduce defensiveness.

By following these strategies, you can help facilitate conversations about diversity and inclusion that are more productive and less likely to trigger defensiveness.

And that actually allow you and your conversation partner to learn from each other's point of view.

One of the worst things of D&I is not being able to have a constructive conversation with people, because people feel attacked. Even though, you might think that they don't have the right to be offended.

It's tricky, but with the above tips we might actually be able to move forward.

Good luck!
